Enhanced Vision significa Visioni Amplificate. È un modo diverso di guardare quello che ci sta intorno: non è un caso ma una scelta, un osservare più che un vedere, avere (o darsi) la possibilità di racchiudere una porzione di ambiente, la casa di fronte, una distesa di terra (o di sale), un aereo passeggero, una nuvola ferma, o semplicemente le foglie al vento in città, di un albero che mai si scorge per la fretta. Come a Piazza Dante a Roma, dietro Piazza Vittorio, appena fuori dallo spazio che ha ospitato la personale di Fabio Pennacchia a Roma, il co-working CORTE, durante la manifestazione internazionale di architettura Open House Roma 2016 – era maggio – dove una lente è stata apposta tra i rami a riattivare l’attenzione perduta.

ARTE AMBIENTALE – URBANA

Ma da cosa è formata l’opera in sé? Si tratta di fare esperienza di arte urbana, o arte ambientale a seconda del contesto. Stringendo il campo: lenti abbandonate, dimenticate, antiquate, da occhiali, da vista (da macchina fotografica?) sono inserite tra l’osservatore casuale e il campo di ricerca che gli si stanzia davanti. Dico campo di ricerca perché se l’osservatore si ferma e accetta la pratica di Enhanced Vision, dalla curiosità scatta l’immaginare e il cercare porta lo scoprire. Il primo passo era stato fatto per la IV Bienal del Fin del Mundo a Mar del Plata, in Argentina. (Leggi la presentazione di Micol di Veroli, curatrice).

DUE DOMANDE A FABIO PENNACCHIA

>> La pratica artistica di Enhanced Vision di Fabio Pennacchia è portata avanti da artisti nomadi a cui Fabio passa la palla, ovvero la lente, da posizionare in diverse parti del mondo e permettere l’esperienza altrove. Ma dove possiamo dunque sperimentarla?

Attualmente le lenti sparse nel mondo sono 23. Le ho raccolte in una pubblicazione di cartoline dal mondo scritte per mano simbolica di Alberto Boatto e Italo Calvino che ho scelto come padrini metafisici di questa pratica. Enhanced Vision è in effetti una pratica che lega più persone intorno ad un punto che mette a fuoco un luogo o un nodo di relazioni significativo in quel momento agli occhi attenti degli osserv-attori. Addentrandoci nel vivo dell’azione, l’istallazione della lente necessita più persone che assumono ruoli diversi e che devono trovare un accordo sul “punto di grazia” nel quale posizionarla. L’insieme di punti costituisce la mappa di un percorso artistico potenziale che si puo’ intraprendere nel corso del tempo seguendo una logica di scambio e non di mercato.

Ma non tutte le lenti sono fisse, alcune sono mobili e seguono il cammino e le scoperte del nomade a cui è stata consegnata, molto spesso ricevo immagini da alcuni di loro da luoghi improbabili. Una delle lenti è posizionata in un territorio abbandonato, una cava di estrazione mineraria, dove siamo intervenuti con un gruppo di artisti nel 2015 e dove contiamo tornare per continuare tale esperimento di arte ambientale: Nomade@Cava. Come direbbe Hakim Bey, una Zona Temporaneamente Autonoma, uno spazio scavato nelle viscere della terra dove poter effettuare un viaggio temporale risalendo alle nostre origini geologiche per riscrivere uno scorcio di storia. >> NoMade non è solo un tuo attributo come esploratore e viaggiatore ma anche il nome dello spazio da te aperto dove intraprendere azioni collettive. Cosa mi dici a riguardo? E come bussare alla tua porta?

Lo spazio NoMade è la naturale evoluzione di Enhanced Vision. Tre anni fa decisi di affondare le radici a Roma creando una “stazione di posta” per artisti in movimento, mettendo a disposizione 3 studi, un laboratorio attrezzato e uno spazio polivalente dove concepire, realizzare e presentare i propri progetti. NoMade è un team di professionisti che si adoperano intorno alla produzione di opere, mostre, scenografie e festival. Per trovarci è semplice, siamo a San Lorenzo a via dei Lucani, la nostra sede è riconoscibile da un grande murales che ricopre la facciata elaborato da Fulvio Capurso, illustratore italiano che vive in Uruguay molto impegnato nell’arte urbana a Montevideo, nell’ambito di una delle residenze artistiche lampo! Fabio Pennacchia – A closer look at his Enhanced Vision project

Enhanced Vision means amplified perceptions. A different way of looking at what sorrounds us, offering an alternative perspective on our everyday environment: the possibility to enclose a house on the other side of the street, a stretch of land, a passing airplane or the contrail it leaves in its wake, an unmoving cloud or the trees with their leaves rustling in the wind – trees one would never notice otherwise in the daily rush of life. This is what happened in Rome’s Piazza Dante, amid the square’s greenery and near to Fabio Pennacchia’s solo exhibition, the co-working space CORTE, during the International Exhibiton of Architectue Open House 2016 that took place in May. On that occasion a lens was suspended between the tree branches, still hanging to this day as a means to capture and revitalize diminishing awareness.

ENVIRONMENTAL/URBAN ART

Having seen that the work itself takes us into a direct urban or natural landscape art experience, depending on the context, what can we say of its actual physical composition? If we move up close we see it is made out of antique or abandoned lenses, once used on photocameras and other objects but now finding a new functional dimension as an optical medium. The lense is in fact secured by transparent fishing lines and set between the casual observer and the designated visual field, offering the opportunity to begin a new form of research. If the passer-by stops and decides to interact with Enhanced Vision what starts off as curiosity rapidly turns into action, arriving at a re-discovery of one’s surroundings.

TWO QUICK QUESTIONS

Q>> The artistic experience Fabio Pennacchia offers through Enhanced Vision is carried out by wandering artists to whom Fabio passes the ball, or rather the lens. This will be placed in different locations around the world, making Enhanced Vision a travelling form of work. Therefore, where do we get the opportunity to experience it?

A>> Presently, there are a total of 23 lenses set in different places. I collected all of them in the form of postcards from across the world, symbolically written by Albeto Boatto and Italo Calvino, whom I chose as metaphysical godfathers for this experience. Enhanced Vision is indeed an experience that ties different people to a point, putting it into focus and knotting it in a web of relations that are significant to the bystanders that are simultaneously onlookers and actors. Getting straight to the heart of the matter, installing such a lens makes it necessary to decide before-hand where to set it, a decision that takes place between different actors playing different roles. Ideally, there is a map of actors around the world, each one consisting of a dot: by connecting these dots you can trace the route to the lens. This work offers a form of reasoned exchange without any form of business related logic. Moreover, not all the lenses are in a fixed place. Some are movable, following the path of a specific actor and exploring the world with him or her (the nomad to whom the lens was assigned). I receive pics of lenses from the most absurd locations. One of them is located on abandoned land, more precisely a quarry, where in 2015 a group of artists, including myself, decided to create an Environmental Art project called Nomade@Cava. As Hakim Bey said in this case: the cava (i.e. the quarry) is a Temporary Autonomous Zone, a place that has been excavated in the bowels of the earth where geological time travel can take place as a means to discover our past and history. Discover it virtually on www.nomadeart.it

Q>> The way of the nomad, the travelling explorer, is more to you than just a way of life, it is also the name (Nomade) you chose for the space in which you make collective actions. What can you tell us about it? How can we find its door?

A>> NoMade space is the natural evolution of Enhanced Vision. Three years ago I decided to put down roots in Rome and create a staging post for traveling artists; I opened my studio, providing three ateliers plus a workshop and a multi-purpose space where it is possible to conceive and present one’s projects and works. NoMade is a team of professionals that strive towards the production of artworks, scenic design and the organization of exhibitions and festivals.

We are in Rome, in Via dei Lucani. Our place is easy to find, as there is a large mural on the outer façade. This is by Fulvio Capurso, an Italian illustrator who lives in Uruguay, actively involved in the Urban Art context in Montevideo – and who resided here for a short time.
